The story of this piece

Abdul Aziz wove this jamawar on his pit loom over a full year. The central vase — a classical motif from 18th-century Kashmiri shawl vocabulary — is set inside a garden of flowers that runs to every corner of the cloth.

A note on the hand. Abdul Aziz weaves jamawar — the long shawl. He is the third generation in his family to do so. His loom occupies the room he was born in. He has never woven the same pattern twice, though he refuses to call this artistry — he says it would be ungenerous to the people who taught him.
